Its side-to-side kick, glide, and unpredictable directional changes imitate a fleeing or injured baitfish, triggering reaction strikes from yellowtail and other predatory game fish.

Surface irons are most closely associated with West Coast saltwater fishing, particularly targeting yellowtail from sportfishing boats, private boats, and sometimes the shoreline. They can also catch tuna, bonito, barracuda, dorado, and calico bass, from Santa Cruz, CA to Cabo San Lucas, MX.

Most surface irons weigh between approximately 1 and 4.5 ounces, depending on their length, shape, thickness, and intended swimming action. Although surface irons look simple, learning to cast, retrieve, and control one correctly takes practice.

How Does a Surface Iron Work?

A surface iron works by creating an erratic swimming action as it moves through the water. When retrieved at the right speed, it should kick from side to side and occasionally change direction in a way that resembles a fleeing or injured baitfish trying to fool a predatory fish.

The exact action of a surface iron depends on the lure, the retrieve speed, the current, the rod angle, the reel, the line setup and many other factors. Not every surface iron is meant to be fished at the same speed. Some perform best with a slower or medium retrieve, while others are designed to be fished faster. The lure itself matters, but its performance is also affected by the angler's retrieval speed, tackle, and conditions.

Lure balance

A balanced surface iron should maintain a consistent swimming action throughout the retrieve. Poor balance can cause the lure to spin, favor one side, poor cast ability, or lose its action at certain speeds.

Retrieve speed

Retrieve speed is one of the most important factors in surface iron fishing. Reeling too slowly may prevent the lure from developing its intended kick. Reeling too quickly may cause it to roll, blow out, or skip across the surface.

Start with a consistent medium retrieve with your rod tip pointed at the lure and adjust your speed until you can see a consistent kick with occasional directional changes.

Current

Current changes the amount of resistance placed against the lure. A surface iron being retrieved against strong current may swim differently than the same lure moving with the current. Slightly slowing the retrieve as the lure climbs the swell can help keep it below the surface. As the lure moves down the backside, the retrieve can be increased again.

Rod angle

Rather than focusing only on handle speed, anglers should pay attention to how quickly the lure is actually moving through the water.

Traditional surface iron anglers often prefer monofilament because it is affordable, strong, easier to cast than braid on a conventional reel, and provides stretch that can help absorb sudden strikes and keep treble hooks connected during the fight.

The best way to understand how a surface iron swims is to test it where you can clearly see the lure. Pay attention to how it responds to different retrieve speeds, rod angles, line angles, and directions of current. Learning the lure’s action before a fast moving bite will help you fish it with greater confidence when the opportunity comes.

Surface Iron Gear and Learning Curve

A traditional surface iron setup usually includes a 9 to 10-foot jig stick, a conventional star-drag reel, and  40-pound monofilament line.

Jig sticks help load the lure during the cast and generate the distance needed to reach feeding fish. A conventional star-drag reel offers line capacity, great free spool, torque and enough drag pressure to stop powerful yellowtail.

A common setup may include:

  • A 9 to 10-foot jig stick rated for approximately 30 to 50-pound line
  • A conventional star-drag reel size like a Shimano Torium 16-20HG or DAIWA Saltist SD35-40
  • 40-pound monofilament
  • A surface iron matched to the conditions and target fish

The equipment can feel intimidating at first. The rod is longer and heavier than many anglers are accustomed to, the reel requires spool control, and the lure is relatively lightweight compared with the size of the setup.

The environment also makes surface iron fishing difficult to learn.

Many anglers begin aboard crowded half-day or full-day sportfishing boats. In Southern California, this may mean targeting yellowtail around La Jolla, the Coronado Islands, Catalina Islands, San Clemente Islands or any offshore banks.

Anglers must learn to cast while dealing with:

  • A moving boat

  • Narrow walkways
  • Railings and overhead obstacles
